Vintage pair of heavy cast brass lions after Antonio Canova’s (1757 – 1822) monument sculpted for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s, Rome. The monument is considered one of his original masterpieces. They are the “Sleeping Lion” (curled up and at ease) and the “Crouching Lion” (extended and alert). The bookends offered here are finely detailed and measure approx. 7.5″ long x 2.5″ wide x 4.25″ tall (one is shorter). They have a combined weight of 4 lbs. and have green felt on the bottom. Each is marked with “Antonio Canova 1757 – 1822.” Very good used vintage condition, nice patina with some small spots of oxidation, but nothing that detracts. Beautiful addition to a library, bookcase or styled shelf. Great book-lover gift.
