Fantastic hand crafted copper vessel with iron handle, perfect for shelf styling. The body is made from a single sheet of copper, curved to form the vessel and joined at the handle. The bottom is joined to the body with cramped or castellated joints along the edge (construction description below; see photos). The iron handle is riveted to the body. The vessel tapers slightly from the rolled rim towards the raised midsection, then flares downward towards the bottom edge. Great aged patina with spotting and color variations consistent with age. CONDITION: Very good used vintage condition; color variations, spotting, some oxidation and verdigris patina; interior shows age and signs of previous use; does NOT hold water.
CONSTRUCTION: This construction method involves creating a feathering by hammering the edges of the sheet of copper to about half its original thickness and then cutting slits at right angles to the edge. These are then bent out alternately and mated with the edge to be joined. The flaps are then hammered close to give a good friction fit that can be sealed by brazing or silver-soldering.
