Vintage framed engraving of “Castle of St. Andrews” (history below) originally created by W. Thomas [unable to find definitive information on the artist] and “published as the Act directs Dec 20. 1790 by S. Hooper, London.” Framed under glass in a wooden black and blue-gray frame with gold accents, the engraving exhibits plate marks (under the mat–see photos). The engraving may have originally been a book plate and a previous owner had it mounted on foam-core board. It measures 12-3/8″ x 10.25″ and is in good preowned vintage condition with some light foxing visible on the lighter areas and scuffs on the frame. Hanging wire in back and new dust cover.

HISTORY (from online sources): St. Andrews Castle is a ruin in the coastal Royal Burgh of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. A castle has stood on this site since the 12th century; the original was destroyed and rebuilt several times. What is seen today are the remains of a 1400 rebuild which after passing through several hands had become a total ruin by 1656. The principal remains are a portion of the south wall enclosing a square tower, the bottle dungeon (which served as a prison), the kitchen tower, and the underground mine [tunnel] and counter-mine. The castle’s grounds are now maintained by Historic Environment Scotland as a schedule monument [a nationally important archaeological site or historic building, given protection against unauthorized change]. The site is entered through a visitor center with displays on its history. Some of the best surviving carved fragments from the castle are displayed in the center, which also has a shop.
