Made by Virginia Metalcrafters under license from Colonial Williamsburg with a copyright of 1953, this heavy brass trivet represents the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom.ย It’s very detailed, measures 6″ x 5.75″, has four feet, and weighs 1 lb. 3 oz.ย It’s in excellent preowned vintage condition and, besides its use as a trivet, it provides a great accent on a gallery wall, as a focal point or a picture or mirror topper.ย Really lovely piece.

HISTORY (from online sources):ย “In the design the shield shows the various Royal emblems of different parts of the United Kingdom: the three lions of England in the first and fourth quarters, the lion of Scotland in the second and the harp of Ireland in the third.ย ย It is surrounded by a garter bearing the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (‘Evil to him who evil thinks’), which symbolizes the Order of the Garter, an ancient order of knighthood of which the King or Queen is Sovereign.ย The shield is supported by the English lion on the left and Scottish unicorn on the right and is surmounted by the Royal crown.ย Below it appears the motto of the Sovereign, Dieu et mon droit (‘God and my right’).ย ย The plant badges of the United Kingdom–rose, thistle and shamrock [the shamrock is missing from this rendition]–are often displayed beneath the shield.ย ย Separate Scottish and English quarterings of the Royal arms originate from the Union of the Crown in 1603.”
Dieu et mon droit, which means “God and my right,” is the motto of the monarch of the United Kingdom.ย It appears on a scroll beneath the shield of the version of the coat of arms of the United Kingdom used outside Scotland. ย The motto is said to have first been used by Richard I (1157โ1199) as a battle cry and presumed to be a reference to his French ancestry (he spoke French and Occitan but knew only basic English) and the concept of the divine right of the monarch to govern.ย It was adopted as the royal motto of England by King Henry V (1386โ1422), with the phrase “and my right” referring to his claim by descent to the French crown.
Honi soit qui mal y pense is a maxim in the Anglo-Norman language, a dialect of Old Norman French spoken by the medieval ruling class in England, meaning “shamed be whoever thinks ill of it,” usually translated as “shame on anyone who thinks evil of it.”ย It is the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter, the highest of all British knighthoods, except in Scotland.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
