FROM ONLINE SOURCES:

1 “A Dining Room in Summer” – Print of Adrien Chancel’s (French, 1853 – 1901) 1877 lithograph on paper depicting an open-air dining room leading out to a garden space featuring a detailed illustration of a serene garden pavilion, exhibiting classical architectural elements and meticulous landscaping, surrounded by trees and flowers, with architectural plans depicted below the main image.  Adrien Chancel was born in Paris in 1853.  As a young man, he trained as an architect with Joyau and Moyaux.  As a trainee, one of his everyday duties was the creation of detailed watercolor drawings of potential projects and Chancel thus quickly became skilled in the use of watercolor.  In particular, he was encouraged by Moyaux, who was, himself, a talented artist.  Chancel won his first national art prize at the age of nineteen and won many more throughout an accomplished and successful career.  He carried out many prestigious architectural design projects, which included the restorations of Auch Cathedral and the façade of the Elysee Palace.  Chancel died at the height of his fame in 1901, aged only 48.

2 “Arc de Triomphe” – Print of detail of a triumphal arch project carried out in 1853 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris by architect Louis-François Boitte (1830 – 1906); six years later Boitte would win the Grand Prix de Rome.  The rendition consists of a plan, a cross-section, and a watercolor elevation to be completed in a single twelve-hour session as part of the “competition of emulation” which marked the early years of training for student architects at the École des Beaux-Arts.  Established by Jacques-François Blondel in 1763, these exercises, used to evaluate future winners of the Prix de Rome, continued until the breakup of the Parisian school in May 1968.  Thirty-four of the drawings created between 1848 and 1867 under the Second Empire were on display at the École des Beaux-Arts this century until January 12, 2019, in the Jean-Bonna studio, as part of the exhibit “Paris During the Second Empire Redesigned.”

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
