Beautiful book issued by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1994 containing five punch-out angel ornaments. Printed on gold paper and mounted on a heavy cardboard accordion, each ornament depicts a different angel (see History below). The ornaments have never been used and are still attached to the book. Lovely addition to an elegant Christmas tree or vignette. The book can be displayed on the coffee table in order to share the history with your guests, while the ornaments can be returned to the book for safe storage after the holidays. APPROX. DIMENSIONS: 6 5/8″ x 5″ x ,75″ – angels range from 4.75″ to 5″ tall x about 3.5″ to 4″ wide.
CONDITION: Excellent preowned but unused vintage condition; the book itself has a discolored area along the top edge of the front cover. The gold cords mentioned in the book are missing.
HISTORY (from the book’s inside front cover): The angels in this book are reproductions of elegant angels clad in windswept drapery and swinging silver-gilt censers from a group of about fifty that adorn the Christmas tree at the Met every year. Made of polychromed terracotta and wood and dressed in silk, they were created by celebrated Neapolitan sculptors in the second half of the 18th century. They are part of some 140 extraordinary figures displayed at the foot of the tree every year, most of them having been donated to the museum by Loretta Hines Howard in 1964, with numerous subsequent additions. The original angels are unsigned but have been attributed to the most prominent Neapolitan sculptors of the period, Giuseppe Sammartino and his pupils. The tree has been a favorite holiday attraction at the Met since 1965. Read the rest of the story in the actual book.
