How to describe these rare and stunning reverse paintings on glass? The set of framed verre églomisé (*) paintings features two Gothic Catholic churches in Normandy, France: (1) Notre Dame de Caudebec, constructed during the 15th and early 16th centuries, and declared by Henry IV of France (1553 – 1610) as being the most beautiful chapel in his kingdom (much of the architectural detail seen in this painting was destroyed by fire and war in the 20th century) ; and (2) Cathédrale Notre Dame de Coutances, constructed from 1210 to 1274 in the town of Coutances; it incorporated the remains of an earlier Norman cathedral. The paintings are after antique lithographs of each, which I have been unable to identify. The images are done in creams and browns with gilding throughout, set against an aquamarine sky. Each includes a description in French of the subject (some of which is difficult to read). Each painting includes a gothic-style gilded border with scrolls, torches, scepters, bats, owls, griffins, and other symbols. The wooden frames are g0ld-and-silver gilt. I don’t know how old these are, but the ancient reverse painting technique experienced several revivals, the most recent having been in the 1920s. They are absolutely stunning in person; the photos don’t do them justice. See below for dimensions and condition.
(*) Verre églomisé is the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish. The technique predates Roman times and had a revival period in Italy from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The name is derived from French decorator and art-dealer Jean-Baptiste Glomy (1711–1786), who was responsible for its second revival in the 18th century.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
