Art Deco Satin Glass Gazelle Bookends Designed by Edwin W. Fuerst Ca. 1936

Pair of satin glass bookends designed and patented by Edwin W. Fuerst (1903 – 1988) in 1936 and manufactured by Owens-Illinois Glass Company.  The Art Deco bookends have a stepped arch “skyscraper” shape and feature a stylized seated gazelle in relief.  The curved top and bottom provide a counterpoint to the angular profile of the gazelles.  Weighing a combined almost 4 lbs., they are solid and sturdy, capable of supporting heavy books.  NOTE: One of the bookends has some damage on the underside along the front curve, about 1.75″ long.  There’s a very small rough place along the edge; evidence of the bookend having been dropped is visible on the underside but not really noticeable from the front.  There is no missing or chipped glass.  We photographed the damage from many angles in an attempt to show the extent and effect (last image) and have adjusted the price accordingly.  Feel free to request additional photos.  The bookends measure 4 3/16″ tall x 5″ wide x 3 7/16″ deep.  Other than the above-mentioned, the bookends are in overall very good used vintage condition.
