Antique Photogravure Entitled “IDYL” After 1850s Painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme 23″ x 19″

$135.00

Antique framed photogravure [an image produced from a photographic negative transferred to a metal plate and etched in] by Goupil & Cie., Paris, after Jean-Léon Gérôme’s 1850s painting “IDYL” (see history below), printed by Samuel L. Hall, New York, ca. 1882.  The etching depicts Daphnis and Chloe, the protagonists in an ancient Greek novel written in the Roman Empire and the only known work of the second-century AD Greek novelist and romance writer Longus.  Framed under glass in a lovely 20th century wooden frame with gold finish and within double mats, it bears the plate marks.  The print appears to have been hand colored–notice the greenery, flowers and drapes.  Overall measurements are 23″ x 19″ (frame is 2″ wide and 1.25″ thick).  The visible area within the mat measures 12″ x 9″.  Excellent preowned antique/vintage condition with a some nicks on the frame’s corners; new dust cover.  Obtained from an estate.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources):  Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824 – 1904) was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as Academicism. The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits and other subjects, bringing the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax.  His paintings were so widely reproduced that by 1880 he was said to be arguably the world’s most famous living artist.  He is considered one of the most important painters from this academic period, and in addition to being a painter, he was also a teacher with a long list of students.  Gérôme’s prodigious energy, long career, and wide popularity resulted in an enormous body of work that now resides in museums and private collections around the world; Ackerman’s revised Catalogue Raisonné of 2018 lists approximately 700 paintings and 70 sculptures.  Gérôme was married to Marie Goupil, founder of Goupil & Cie.  See below.

Goupil & Cie. is an international auction house and merchant of contemporary art and collectibles founded in 1850 by Jean-Baptiste Adolphe Goupil (1806 – 1893).  Goupil & Cie. became a leading art dealership in 19th century France with its headquarters in Paris.  Step by step, Goupil established a worldwide trade in fine art reproductions of paintings and sculptures, with a network of branches and agents in London and other major art capitals across Continental Europe as well as in New York and Australia.  Les Ateliers Photographiques, their workshop north of Paris. was instrumental in their expansion from 1869.  Jean-Baptiste Adolphe Goupil’s daughter Marie was married to the artist Jean-Léon Gérôme.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
