Beautiful antique oil painting on canvas featuring a milkmaid watering her cows, trees on the left, a stone fence on the right, a farmhouse in the near distance, and rolling hills in the background. Lovely muted colors for a moody look. Both the canvas and stretcher show a lot of age, including a small tear on the girl’s skirt, a dimple in the lower right corner, two small holes on the sky next to the trees, and small age spots here and there. The lighter areas in the photos are reflections, not fading. This painting is a variation of three examples I found online signed by three different artists. Although the subject matter and positioning of the milkmaid and cows are very similar to the others, the girl and setting of this one are completely different: farmhouse, stone fence on the right, cluster of trees on the left and hills in the distance. The painting is neither signed nor dated, but based on condition, type of stretcher and method of stretching, it’s safe to say that it’s at least 100 years old, if not older. The stretcher is stamped with the size on all four sides and an illegible patent number. It measures 22″ x 16″ and is ready for a new frame or for display as is, on the wall or on an easel.
