These two antique plaster intaglios in vintage shadowbox wooden frames with velvet backgrounds feature two American military war heroes from the War of 1812. The framed pieces were sold by Maier & Berkele, Charles Willis, Associate, of Atlanta, Georgia (Maier & Berkele started business in the late 1880s; Charles Willis was associated with M&B between 1948 and 1959). Both frames have top brass rings for hanging. The intaglios are both in excellent antique condition and the frames are in very good preowned vintage condition; the outer sides of the frames have dulled over time, and the glasses are a bit loose. Overall measurements are 7.25″ x 6.5″ x 1″. The intaglios measure approx. 2.5″ in diameter. Fantastic antique military memorabilia for the history lover. Excellent addition to traditional, European-inspired interiors.
HISTORY (from online sources):
Jacob Jennings Brown was known for his victories as an American army officer in the War of 1812, where he reached the rank of general. His successes on the northern border during that war made him a national hero, and he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal.
Alexander Macomb was the Commanding General of the United States Army from May 29, 1828, until his death on June 25, 1841. Macomb was the field commander at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 and, after the stunning victory, was lauded with praise and styled “The Hero of Plattsburgh” by some of the American press. He was promoted to Major General for his conduct, receiving both the Thanks of Congress and a Congressional Gold Medal.
