Antique History Books Two Partial Sets Six Volumes 1899

This set of antique history books by John Clark Ridpath, L.L.D. (1840-1900), entitled HISTORY OF THE WORLD and copyrighted in 1899 consists of two partial sets totaling six volumes.  Books are hardback with cloth covers and leather corners and spines with gold lettering; marbled endpapers and page edges; 11″ x 8″ with thicknesses varying from 2.5″ to 1.5″; each book weighs 5+ lbs.

SET 1 – MANKIND, “the evolution of mankind and the story of all races, being an account of ethnic origins, primitive estate, early migrations, social conditions and present promise of the principal families of men, together with a preliminary inquiry on the time, place and manner of the beginning.”  “Profusely illustrated with colored plates, race maps and charts, type pictures, sketches and diagrams.”  Originally 4 volumes; included here are Volumes I, II and IV.

SET 2 – NATIONS, “the development of social institutions and the story of all nations, being an account of the principal events in the career of the human race from the beginnings of civilization to the present time.”  “Profusely illustrated with colored plates, race maps and charts, type pictures, sketches and diagrams.”  Originally 5 volumes; included here are Volumes I, IV and V.

CONDITION is good to poor: covers are faded and damaged; a couple of the front covers are off the binding; one spine is partially missing; leather parts are fragile.  However, the interior pages are in remarkably good condition for being 120+ years old.  Fascinating content, illustrations, maps and photographs.  While these books offer a glimpse into how the world’s history was viewed and related at the time, and it would be interesting to peruse them, the covers will likely continue to deteriorate if they are handled; therefore, unless they are stabilized, their best use is decorative.  See photos.  Please feel free to ask any questions before purchasing and/or request additional photos, which we will be happy to provide.
