Cutout photographs of marble sculptures or porcelain figurines of a boy and a girl mounted on black paper with gold borders and framed under glass in antique gesso-on-wood carved frames
1 in stock
Obtained from an estate, this charming pair of what could be called “reverse silhouettes” consists of cutouts of photographs of marble sculptures or porcelain figurines of a boy and a girl mounted on black paper with gold borders and framed under glass in antique gesso-on-wood frames with carved details.ย The photographs (not prints) are a creamy white color, not sepia but not black and white.ย The boy is barefooted, seated on a stump; he’s dressed in a short-sleeved blouse with kerchief and short pants; he holds a shovel or spade in his right hand and perhaps a hat in his right and gazes to his left.ย The girl appears to be half seated (or in the process of either sitting or standing); her hair is in an up-do with braids; she wears a ruffled dress held up over her left knee with one hand, the other hand raised as if in greeting, her head inclined and gazing to her right.ย When placed side by side, the subjects are looking at each other.ย Both pedestals have inscriptions on them, but we haven’t been able to make them out–see photos with high contrast.ย We’ve searched high and low to identify the sculptures or figurines these represent, without success; they are in the style of 18th century romantic art depicting idealized subjects within bucolic sceneries.ย They were obviously special to their previous owner who went to great lengths to have them professionally mounted and framed.ย A quick peek under the dust cover revealed a wooden panel, likely original to the antique frame, and foam-core board.ย We estimate the frames date from the early 20th century and the framing from the 1950s or 1960s.ย See dimensions and condition description below.ย ย

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
